How to change a QR code after printing

You can change where a printed QR code goes only if it is a dynamic code: you edit the link in the account that made it. A static code cannot be changed, but the page it opens can often be redirected.

Printing it?

That code can never be changed

The link is baked into the pattern. If the page moves or the offer behind it ends, every poster you printed points at a dead URL and the only fix is reprinting them.

A dynamic code points at us instead, so you can change where it goes whenever you like — and see how many people scanned it.

Check which kind you printed

Scan the code and read the link before it opens. If it is a short link on a QR code company's domain, the code is dynamic. Log in to that account and change the destination. Every copy you printed follows on the next scan.

If the link is your own address, the code is static, and the pattern cannot be edited. Say 2,000 leaflets point at yourshop.com/spring-offer, and the offer has ended. Those leaflets will open that address for as long as they exist.

What you can do with a static code already in print

Change what is at the address. If the domain is yours, have the old address redirect to the new page. Every leaflet now lands in the right place and nothing is reprinted. Try this first.

Cover it. If the address is not yours, such as a file-sharing link or a profile you have since closed, put a sticker with a new code over the old one on anything still in your hands.

Let the run end. If neither works, let the old pieces run out and fix the next print run.

Make the next print run editable

On the next run, print a dynamic code. The pattern holds a short link that never changes, and your account decides where it sends people. The next time a page moves, you change one field instead of placing a print order.

Keep the old address working while old copies are still around. They stay static, and a dynamic code on the new run does nothing for them.

A dynamic code from us works while you subscribe. If you stop, it stops resolving 7 days after your paid period ends, and the new run opens a plain notice instead of your page. If the next run points at a page you are sure will never move, a free static code from the generator above is still the right choice.

How it works

  1. Create. Make a dynamic code and point it at the page the next run should open.
  2. Print. Send the SVG to the printer with the next run, and scan the proof before it goes ahead.
  3. Update anytime. When that page moves, change the link in your account. The run you printed keeps working.

What it costs

Static codes are free, with no account. Dynamic codes cost $49 a year, which saves 30% against paying monthly, or $5.90 a month. We recommend yearly. Tax is included. Every account starts with a 7-day free trial that needs no payment details, and a subscription covers 5 dynamic codes. Cancel anytime and keep access to the end of the period you paid for.

If you stop paying, your dynamic codes stop resolving once the paid period and a further 7 days of grace have passed. Nothing is deleted: the codes, their links and their scan history stay in your account, and every code starts working the moment you subscribe again. Static codes never depend on us. They keep working as long as the page they point to does. We never switch one off, but we cannot bring back a page that has gone.

Questions

My code opens my own website. Can I change where it goes without reprinting?

Yes, by redirecting the address rather than changing the code. Whoever runs your website can send the old address on to the new page with a permanent redirect, and many website builders have a setting for it. The printed code still opens the old address, and the visitor lands on the new page a moment later.

Can you change a dynamic code I made somewhere else?

No. Only the company whose short link is in the pattern can change where it goes, so log in there and edit the destination. Moving the code to us would mean a new code and a reprint. If you are reprinting anyway, that is the moment to choose where the next one lives.

Can I change where a code points after it is printed?

With a dynamic code, yes — as often as you like, and the printed image never changes. The short link inside the pattern is fixed for the life of the code; only the destination behind it moves.

With a static code, no. The link is part of the pattern, so changing it means generating a different code and reprinting everything the old one is on.

Can I turn a static code I already printed into a dynamic one?

No. They are different images, so anything already printed goes on pointing where it always did. This is the one decision worth making before a print run rather than after: if there is any chance the destination will move, print a dynamic code.

Need to change the link later?

7 days free, no card needed. Make a dynamic code and edit it whenever you like.
